PROLOGUE

I was always jealous of her.
Jealous of her blonde hair, that swayed in the wind;
Jealous of the blue eyes that seemed to catch every guy's attention;
Jealous of her pretty smile, that I wished were my own;
Jealous of the way he looked at her--the way Joe looked at her.
I was jealous of Mandy.
I was their neighbor too.
I knew them for just as long as she did.
I was friends with them too.
So why did she catch his eye, and I didn't?
How come there was never a song written about me?
I was their friend. I knew that.
But I wanted to be so much more.
I wanted Joe to see what he was missing out on.
I wanted Joe to know that I existed too.
Not only exist, but I wanted to exist in his arms.
I wanted him to look into my eyes..and catch a glimpse of heaven.
They're broken up now..he and Mandy.
This was my chance.
The chance for him to love me.
I'll wait.

Sixteen Candles


"Happy Birthday, (your name)!"

"Happy Birthday!"

"Yo, Birthday Girl!"

"Hey (your name)! Happy Birthday!"

"Thank you, thank you," I said, as the guests walked into my house.

My sixteenth birthday. It was definitely something to be happy about.

"Hey Birthday Girl!," Mandy said, as she put my present on the table and gave me a hug.

"Hey Mandy! Thanks for coming," I forced a smile.

It's not that I didn't like her. She's an incredibly sweet girl. It's just..that I've always been jealous of her.

"The Jonas family is here!" I said smiling.

I ran to the door as Mr. and Mrs. Jonas, Kevin, Nick, Joe, and Frankie walked in.

I hadn't seen the boys in forever! But their tour had finally ended, and they'd be back home in New Jersey for a couple months.

"Hey Guys!" Mandy screamed. She hadn't seem them for a while as well.

"Happy Birthday," Kevin said, hugging me.

"Thank you," I smiled, "I'm so glad you guys are back."

"We had to be here for your birthday," Nick said, as he gave me a hug as well.

"Aww, thanks," I smiled.

I turned to see Joe, but he was in mid-hug with Mandy.

I turned away, trying to fight the resentment I felt inside. I was my birthday.

Even when they stopped hugging, he didn't even look at me. Not a single glance.

"Nice to see that you came to my party, Joe," I blurted out.

"Oh!" he said, as he gave me a weak hug, "Sorry, everyone was talking to you so, I went to Mandy. Then we started a conversation, and I kinda forgot to say hi to you."

"It's cool," I lied, "Thanks for coming."

"No problem," he smiled, then turned back to Mandy.

How was it even possible to be such good friends with your ex?!

I rolled my eyes, and walked into the backyard where everyone was hanging out and eating.

"Are you okay?" Nick asked me.

"Yeah," I sighed.

"You better cheer up," he said, "It's your birthday."

I nodded.

"Happy Birthday to you!" my mom began singing, as she brought out the cake.

I smiled, as everyone joined in singing.

My mom placed the cake on a table.

"Happy Birthday dear (your name)! Happy Birthday to you!" everyone sang.

"Make a wish!" little Frankie Jonas yelled.

I smiled.

I looked into the glass screen door, and saw Joe still standing inside the house with Mandy.

I sighed, then blew out my candles.

"What did you wish for?" Frankie asked me.

"Nothing," I lied.

I glanced over at Joe again.

Sixteen Candles; and on every single one, I wished for you...

Girl Advice



The next day, I was hanging out at the Jonas' house. Nick and I sat on one side of the couch, while Frankie was watching cartoons as he sat on the other.

"He wasn't even there when everyone sang 'Happy Birthday' to me," I complained to Nick.

"He didn't purposely miss it," Nick said, "Your mom just came out of nowhere with the cake. He probably didn't know, so he didn't come outside."

"Why did he stay inside in the first place?" I asked gloomily.

"He was talking to Mandy," Nick told me.

I sighed and remained silent.

"Stop being sad," Nick said to me.

"He'll never like me," I said.

"He likes you," Nick said, putting a hand on my shoulder.

"Not the way I like him," I said sadly.

"He just thinks you're too young for him," Nick told me.

"2 years isn't that big of a difference," I said offended, "It's a big difference when someone is 4 years old, and someone else is 6 years old. Because 4 year olds barely can talk, and 6 year olds are already going to school."

"Yeah," Nick agreed.

"But 16 and 18?!" I complained, "I don't see anything wrong with an 18 year old liking a 16 year old."

"But Joe knew you when you were 4 years old and he was 6," Nick began.

"So?" I said.

"Probably to him, you'll always be the friend who could barely talk as he went off to first grade," Nick finished.

"Gee, thanks alot, Nick," I said sarcastically.

"Sorry," Nick chuckled, "It wasn't supposed to come out that way."

Suddenly, the front door burst open, and Joe came running in.

"You guys! You guys!" Joe said, as he ran into the room we were in, "I need advice! Like seriously!"

"About what?" Nick asked him.

"About--About," Joe said, "Ugh! You can't help me! Why couldn't we have at least one sister?!"

"Why do you need a sister?" I asked.

"Because," Joe said, frantically, "I need to talk to a girl."

Nick and I looked at each other, with the same confused expression on our faces.

"Umm, Joe," I said, "I'm a girl."

Joe's eyes got wide.

"That right!" he smiled, "Thank God you're here!"

He gave me a huge hug.

"Okay, Joe," I said, letting go, "What do you need advice about?"

"Well, first," Joe said, "Nick, get outta here."

"What? Why?" he asked.

"Because," Joe said, "Oh never mind. (your name), let's just go upstairs."

"Okay," I said, following Joe up to his room.

We took a seat on his bed, then I said, "So what's up?"

"Well, I need to know," he began, "How do you know if a girl likes you?"

"Well there are alot of ways to tell," I began.

"Name a few?" he asked me.

"Well, they might playfully push you when you're saying something stupid," I began, "Or teasing them. They might also..laugh..at everything you say, whether it's funny or not."

Joe nodded.

"They might..touch your hair playfully," I began again, "Even when you tell them..to stop."

I spoke nervously, as he gazed into my eyes, listening intently to every word. I didn't even know if I could continue with my sentences. He was just too beautiful.

"Anything else?" he asked me.

"They might also..sit so close to you," I said calmly, "Just so your arms could..touch."

I began to scoot a couple inches away from Joe, when I realized that our arms were touching as we sat on the bed.

"Well thanks," he smiled, "That was actually pretty helpful."

"No problem," I giggled, "So who's this girl?"

He gave an embarrassed smile.

"Who is it?" I kept asking.

"Promise not to tell anyone?" he asked.

"Promise," I said.

"and not to laugh?" he asked again.

"I promise," I said.

"Okay, okay," Joe said, "I like.."

Please be me, Please be me, I thought to myself.

"Mandy," he finally said.

My eyes got wide.

"What?" I asked in shock.

All I Wanted Was Him



Joe looked up at me.

"Mandy?" I asked again, "You like Mandy?!"

"Sssh!" Joe said to me, "Don't say it so loud!"

"Why not?" I asked.

"Because I don't know if she likes me back," he said, "and if this doesn't work out for me, I don't want everyone to know to that I was even trying in the first place."

"But you don't care if I know?" I asked.

"No," he said, "You're the one giving me advice."

"And you think I'm not gonna tell your brothers?" I laughed.

"(your name)!!" Joe whined.

"I'm kidding," I laughed, "I won't tell."

"Promise?" he asked.

"I promise," I rolled my eyes.

"Okay, and you gotta help me with this," he begged.

"Help you?" I asked.

"Like tell me what to say to her," Joe said, "Ask her if she likes me."

"Joe, why are you acting like this is all new to you?" I asked, "You've had girlfriends before. And why are you trying to get back with Mandy? You guys already broke up."

"I was like fifteen," he said to me, "Fifteen-year-olds are dumb, fifteen-year-olds make mistakes...And I think the whole break-up thing with Mandy, was my fifteen-year-old mistake."

"You really like her, huh?" I said gloomily.

"Yeah," he said, "and I don't wanna screw this up again."

I sighed.

"So you'll help me?" he asked again.

"I guess," I sighed.

"Thanks, your awesome!" Joe said, giving me another hug.

"No problem," I lied.

"Anything you want, anything," he said, "I'll make sure you get it."

"Nah, it's okay," I said, "All I ask for is a simple thank you."

"No, seriously!" Joe said, "I'll take you shopping! I'll..name a song after you!"

I rolled my eyes, "It's okay, Joe."

"I'll..I'll..hook you up with Nick!" he said.

"Hahaha! I don't like Nick!" I laughed.

"You're always with him!" Joe said.

"He's my friend!" I laughed, "and besides, you said it yourself..fifteen-year-olds are dumb."

Joe laughed.

"Fine, then YOU name it," Joe said, "What do you want? ANYTHING. I'll make sure you get it."

"The one thing I want," I said, "you wouldn't give it to me."

"What is it?" he asked.

I smiled and just shook my head.

I wanted to say, 'your heart';
but that just would've been pointless...

Joe and Mandy


A couple days later, I was up in my room, listening to my ipod. Listening to JB's newest CD to be exact. Just 'cause I was thier friends, didn't mean I couldn't be a fan.

"Splitting apart, it's getting harder to tell what you want, I'm so bored with these," I sang, "Splitting apart it's getting harder to tell what you want, and I'M SO BORED WITH THESE!"

A knock came upon my door.

"I'm left in the dark; I never thought you'd be breaking my heart," I continued.

"Im so bored with these ga-aames!" another voice said.

I took my headphones out, and turned to the door.

"God, you scared me," I said, as I saw Nick standing there.

"Hah, sorry," he laughed.

"What's up?" I asked as he took a seat on my bed.

"Nothing," he shrugged, "I came over 'cause Joe was already coming. I decided to come with."

"Joe's here?" I asked.

"Downstairs," Nick said, "talking to your mom about the crazy girl at our concert in Florida."

"Oh, haha!" I laughed, "I remember when you guys called me to tell me about that."

"Yeah," Nick said, "So..what's up with you and Joe?"

"Nothing," I said, "Why?"

"I don't know," Nick said, "He's just always wanting to come here, and you guys always talk on the phone now. I just thought something was up."

"What'd you think?" I asked.

"I thought maybe you guys were like..seeing each other," Nick said.

"Pfft, I wish!" I laughed, "He's just been needing advice lately. That's all."

"Yo!" Joe said as he burst open my bedroom door.

"Hey," I smiled.

"(your name), I gotta talk to you," Joe said, "Nick..can you leave?"

"What?!" Nick said, "Again?"

"Go talk to Mrs. (your last name)," Joe said, "she's just reading a magazine."

"Whatever," Nick said as he left my room.

"I feel bad that we keep doing that," I said.

"Eh, he'll get over it," Joe said, "So anyways, are we gonna do the 'Call Mandy Plan'?"

"I guess," I said, "But..maybe we shouldn't."

"Why not?" Joe asked.

"Because it's like an invasion of privacy," I said, "She's gonna think she's just talking to ME. But in reality, she'll be on speaker phone, and YOU will hear every word she says."

"But that's the whole point!" Joe said, "So we can find out if she likes me."

"Well," I said, hesitantly.

"You said you'd help me!" Joe said.

"Fine," I said, reaching for my cell phone.

I dialed Mandy's number.

Ring.Ring.Ring.

"Is it on speaker?" Joe asked.

"Sssh!!" I said as I nodded.

"Hello?" Mandy's voice came.

"Hey," I said.

"What's up?" she asked.

"Nothing," I said, "I'm just bored."

"Me too," Mandy said, "I think I'm gonna go over to the Jonas' in like an hour. You can come with. I'll walk by your house and we can walk together."

"That sounds cool," I said.

Joe mouthed to me, "Ask her."

"Umm," I said, "Speaking of the Jonas family, do you and Joe..have a thing going on?"

"Nooo," she said in an embarrassed tone.

"You can tell me," I said.

"Well," Mandy said, "I don't know."

"Do you like him?" I asked.

"Well," she said, "Well--I don't know. Well, actually..YEAH."

Joe had a huge smile on his face, and began jumping up and down, trying not to say anything so Mandy wouldn't know he was there.

My heart sunk. Joe's plan was working out perfectly. I didn't have chance after all.

"Hello?" Mandy said, when she didn't hear my reply.

"Actually, I gotta go," I said.

"Oh..okay," Mandy said.

"Call you later," I said, then hung up.

"YEAH!" Joe screamed.

"Well, there ya have it," I said, "She likes you."

"Thanks for calling!" Joe said, "You're the best!!!"

"Congrats," I said, "You get what you want..again."

"You're happy for me, right?" Joe asked.

"Ecstatic," I said blandly.
